Seed Starting: Basics

Published on 13 February 2025 at 21:21

Steps to take

Basic

  1. Choose Your Seeds: Select seeds suited for indoor starting, like tomatoes, peppers, and herbs.

  2. Gather Supplies: You'll need seed trays, pots, or recycled containers, seed-starting mix, and labels.

  3. Fill Containers: Use a lightweight seed-starting mix to fill your containers, leaving about 1/2 inch from the top.

  4. Plant Seeds: Follow the depth recommendations on the seed packet. Generally, plant seeds about twice as deep as their diameter.

  5. Water Gently: Use a spray bottle or a gentle stream of water to moisten the soil. Avoid over-watering, which can cause mold.

  6. Provide Light: Place the containers in a sunny window or use grow lights. Seedlings need about 12-16 hours of light each day.

  7. Keep Warm: Maintain a consistent temperature of about 65-75°F (18-24°C). A heat mat can help with this.

  8. Monitor Growth: Keep an eye on moisture levels and thin out seedlings if they become crowded.

  9. Transplant: Once the seedlings have a few sets of true leaves, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting them into your garden.

Happy gardening! 🌱
